テンジン・チョーギャル
チベット遊牧民の家庭に生まれ、ヒマラヤ高原の音楽と深くつながりを持つ一方、幅広い音楽的知識に基づいた現代的な音楽表現を取り入れ、直観力を活かした唯一無二の表現で世界的に評価の高いミュージシャンの1人。オーストラリア在住。
音楽のキャリアは20年以上を数え、オーストラリアをはじめニュージーランド、日本、インド、ドイツ、バングラデシュ、ロシア、アメリカなど国内外のフェスティバルや音楽イベントに招かれて演奏を行っているほか、ブリスベンで毎年開催されるフェスティバル・オブ・チベットなど数多くのイベントやコンサートを自身で企画、主催。
ニューヨークのカーネギーホールで開催されている 「Tibet's houses benefit annual concert 」にはパティ・スミス、ローリー・アンダーソン、フィリップ・グラスといった世界的ミュージシャンと共にほぼ毎年出演している。
ソロおよび自身のバンドTibet2Timbuk2で計9枚のインディーズ・アルバムをリリース。その他、フィリップ・グラスとの『The Last Dalai Lama』、パティ・スミスとの『Peradam』など世界的なアーティストとのコラボレーションアルバムがある。
長年の友人ジェシー・パリス・スミス、ローリー・アンダーソンとともに発表したアルバム『Songs from the Bardo』は2021年のグラミー賞にノミネートされた。
現在、オーストラリア屈指のオーケストラ、カメラータ室内管弦楽団と共に作成中の新しいアルバム『Dear Ama la』など複数の新しい音楽プロジェクトに取り組んでいる。
-テンジン・チョーギャルのこれまでの歩み-
音楽家のテンジン・チョーギャルは、チベットのルーツを活かし、独自の作曲を通じて自身の文化的系譜やチベットの人々が直面する現代の課題を表現しています。
テンジンはチベットで遊牧民の家族に生まれ、1970年代初頭に家族と共に中国の占領から逃れ、インドのダラムサラにあるチベット難民コミュニティで育ちました。そこでは、ダライ・ラマ法王が文化の保存を積極的に奨励しており、テンジンは自身に秘められた音楽の才能を探求し始めました。
テンジン・チョーギャルは故郷の遊牧民の音楽に特別なつながりを感じています。彼は父親がリンブ（竹笛）を巧みに演奏し、母親が美しい歌声を持っていたことを思い出し、これらの初期の影響が彼の音楽への情熱の大部分を占めていると考えています。
2016年公開の映画「The Last Dalai Lama?」では、息を呑むような音楽でフィリップ・グラスとコラボレーションしました。彼は現在、ローリー・アンダーソンとともにチベットの“死者の書”の解釈に取り組んでおり、スミソニアン博物館から数か月以内に公開される予定です。
また、2008 年からオーストラリアのブリスベンで毎年恒例の「チベットフェスティバル」を開催し、音楽、映画、アート、ディスカッションを通じてチベット文化を紹介しています。彼は、2011 年と 2013 年に「アジア パシフィック スクリーン アワード」の音楽監督を務め、ブリスベン ヒマラヤ映画祭の芸術監督も務めています。 2015年にはオーストラリアヒマラヤ財団の大使としての役割で、彼はネパール側のチベット国境を訪れ、祖先の故郷に最も近づくことができました。
テンジンは、2011 年と 2013 年にアジア パシフィック スクリーン アワードの音楽監督を務め、数多くのテレビ番組、映画、ドキュメンタリーのサウンドトラックを書き、演奏してきました。ブリスベン・フェスティバル・オブ・チベット、ヒマラヤ映画祭、ウィメンズ・ウィズダム・コンサート・シリーズ（シドニー・オペラハウス、フェデレーション・スクエア）などの音楽や文化活動を通じて、テンジンは人間であることが本当に意味することについてのチベットの物語を共有しています。
Tenzin Choegyal is one of the world’s finest musicians in the Tibetan tradition. As a son of Tibetan nomads, he feels a particular connection to the music of the high Himalayan plateau.
In a career spanning 20+ years Tenzin has performed at festivals across Australia and curated numerous events and concerts including Brisbane’s annual Festival of Tibet. Internationally he has performed in New Zealand, Japan, India, Germany, Bangladesh, Russia and USA, including performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall. He has also opened many of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Public Talks in Australia, New Zealand and Japan with his musical offerings.
While proudly continuing the unbroken nomadic lineage which is central to his repertoire, Tenzin also embraces opportunities to take his music into more contemporary, uncharted territory, both in the studio and on stage.
Tenzin has nine independent albums, three of them with his fusion band Tibet2Timbuk2, and regularly performs with Camerata Brisbane’s acclaimed Chamber Orchestra. His collaborative albums include The Last Dalai Lama?with Philip Glass, Peradam album by Soundwalk Collective with Patti Smith featuring Anoushka Shankar & Charlotte Gainsbourh and the 2021 Grammy-nominated Songs from the Bardo released through Smithsonian Folkways with his longtime friend and collaborator Jesse Paris Smith and Laurie Anderson – a moving interpretation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead.
An outstanding composer/ performer with a great depth of musical knowledge, intuition and inventiveness, Tenzin continues to bring new sounds of Tibet while strongly holding the essence of ancient Tibetan wisdom. He attributes his art form to the early karmic imprints of hearing his mother and father as a toddler.
Tenzin Choegyal is currently working on a few new music projects and a new album “Dear Ama la” with one of Australia’s finest Camerata Chamber Orchestra.

Background
Singer songwriter Tenzin Choegyal draws on his Tibetan roots to create original compositions which uniquely express his cultural lineage and the contemporary challenges faced by his people.
Tenzin was born to a nomadic family in Tibet, escaped the Chinese occupation with his family in the early 1970s and was raised in a Tibetan refugee community in Dharamsala, India. There, where His Holiness the Dalai Lama actively encourages his people to preserve their culture, Tenzin first began to explore his musical talents.
Tenzin feels a particular connection to the music of the wandering people of his homeland. He recalls his father’s mastery of the lingbu (bamboo flute) and his mother’s beautiful singing, and attributes much of his musical passion to those early influences.
Tenzin’s award winning songs have found a place in the complex tapestry of global sounds while collaboration with numerous Australian and international performers have allowed him to experiment with rhythm and structure and challenge traditional Tibetan musical norms.
Tenzin Choegyal plays the Dranyen (Tibetan lute) and Lingbu (transverse bamboo flute). His most outstanding instrument, however, is his voice. His music has been described as beautifully evocative, healing, and transcendent.

Tenzin Choegyal offers a thoroughly enjoyable workshop which explores the Tibetan style of vocal projection and spans a range of techniques unique to his musical lineages. He draws his inspirations from the wandering storytellers who performed musical parables and homage songs and shares this knowledge of stories told through songs, while leading participants on a musical journey from the joyous to the contemplative.
Tenzin will also share his knowledge in Mantra singing – energy-based sounds which produce vibrations within the universe – was revered as a powerful tool for meditation. The word mantra is derived from two Sanskrit words – man meaning mind and tra meaning to protect or to free from.
